If you’re not using Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), you’re missing out on an improved experience for your patients, and an untapped revenue stream. Here’s why:
First, let’s talk at a general level about what RPM is. When you use RPM, you’re taking advantage of current technology that can accurately collect and monitor a patient’s health status from a distance. RPM gathers information such as heart rate, weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, and other vital signs, and then securely transmits that patient’s physiologic data to the appropriately qualified care team.

An Overview of RPM Billing
When it comes to Remote Patient Monitoring, your billing will be centered around 4 specific CPT Codes for RPM. Short for Current Procedural Terminology, these codes allow for health care professionals to use a uniform set of language to classify medical services. This is extremely helpful when it comes to standardizing and streamlining billing and reporting.
Many of the CPT codes are similar with minor variations depending on the exact services rendered.
CPT Code 99453
This CPT code handles the initial setup and patient education on how to use their medical device properly. CPT code 99453 is a one-time code and the Medicare national reimbursement average is $18.48.
CPT Code 99454
CPT code 99454 covers 16 days of remote data monitoring in a rolling 30-day period. This code can be billed once every 30-days and is reimbursed $55.77 per patient per month.
CPT Code 99457
This CPT code covers 20 minutes or more of dedicated monitoring by clinical staff, a physician, or another qualified healthcare professional in a calendar month. This includes interactive communication with the patient and or caregiver during the month. CPT code 99457 is reimbursed $50.18 per patient per month.
CPT Code 99458
This CPT code is an add-on code for patients who receive an additional 20 minutes of RPM services in a calendar month. CPT code 99458 is reimbursed $40.84 per patient per month.
RPM Will Diversify Revenue Streams
Every day we’re seeing the demand increase for telehealth and RPM services, and some patients are coming to expect this avenue for their health care plan and providers. When you introduce an RPM program to your practice, you’re not only staying on the cutting edge of care options available to your patients. You’re also diversifying your revenue streams by bringing in outpatient revenue that wouldn’t be possible otherwise, all while streamlining your chronic care management services and improving patient health outcomes.
Additionally, with certain areas experiencing a shortage of medical personnel, using remote patient monitoring programs can be a tool to help your staff be more efficient and avoid any disruptions to patient care.
Step Into the Future of Chronic Disease Management
Your patients deserve nothing less than real-time, remote, and continuous monitoring of their health data. Not only is this the future of chronic disease management, but it’s the most relevant, valuable source of data on your patient’s condition available.
